Imprints

For more than half a century on Mount Athos, first as abbot of Stavronikita and then of Iveron, Archimandrite Vasileios lived a monastic life that shaped an entire generation of Orthodox spirituality. Imprints gathers the fruit of that life in its most distilled form: brief, often single-sentence passages, some no longer than a breath, offered without chapters and without argument.

Between these passages stand quiet portraits: an aged ascetic keeping vigil beside the grave he has dug for himself, an unlettered monk dying in peace, a schoolgirl who became “the mother of her class,” a boy named Rade whose suffering face shines with unexpected hope. Vasileios writes of writing itself as a kind of confession, of humility as the ground of every true word, of silence as a form of speech, and of death not as an ending but, in his own words, as “a surprise of presence.” Drawing constantly on Abba Isaac the Syrian and the Church’s liturgical books, and reaching even into Viktor Frankl’s account of Auschwitz for a single unforgettable witness, this is a book meant to be read slowly, a page or a line at a time.

With a foreword by Bishop Maxim Vasiljević and translated from the Greek by Fr. Gregory Edwards, Imprints offers readers not an argument to follow but a life to sit beside.

Archimandrite Vasileios (secular surname Gontikakis) was born in Heraklion, Crete, on February 8, 1936. He served as abbot of Stavronikita Monastery from 1968 to 1990, then as abbot of the Holy Monastery of Iveron from 1990 onward, playing a significant role in the modern revival of Athonite cenobitic monasticism. He is the author of several other works translated into English, including Hymn of Entry (St Vladimir's Seminary Press, 1984) and The Thunderbolt of Ever-Living Fire (Sebastian Press, 2014).
