From Athena to Theotokos” explores the transformation of classical Greek statuary, the blend of ancient polytheism with Christian monotheism, and the birth of a novel aesthetic experience of historicity, all through the lens of the Theotokos mosaic in Hagia Sophia. This work illustrates how the depiction of Theotokos, drawing on the imagery of the en-throned female goddess, transitions from the sculpture's three-dimensionality to the two-dimensional iconicity, embedding a deep syncretism between diverse divine visions. It further reveals how this mosaic ushers in a new understanding of the divine manifesting in history, positioning historicity as the sacred space of the numinous.
